The Underbelly Bazaar - Carnivale
Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 September @ The Hi-Fi Bar & Ballroom
125 Swanston Walk, Melbourne What a spectactular show!!! The costumes, the colors, the culture!! And what a journey! We were taken through the world trade fair of 1939, a mish mash of world sights and sounds. The performances were outstanding, many congratulations to all! Melbourne Middle Eastern Dance Festival The Art of Sword Technique - with Melusina
With Sharon's advice- be sure to take advantage of the opportunites here in oz - ringing in my ears I booked a place in Mel Roger's sword workshop. It was amazing! esp. watching people's demeaner change as they danced with and balanced the sword.
As Mel was saying, remember this is a weapon, use it with respect and realise the sheer power it alone has. We covered the different areas to balance your sword as well as moving while balancing.
The short choreography also took us through various movements - creating a greater understanding of how the sword feels while moving. An amazing worshop! Highly recomended.
- sorry for the lack of photos - I was too busy dancing - but to hopefully satisfy, here's a pic of Mel with her beloved sword.
Splash Dance Showcase! A night to journey across the globe and through the realms of imagination via the vehicle of dance. The Showcase was a huge night of performance with some real "sparkle motion".
I particularly liked the punks! nice wigs. Lots of well choreographed dances, lots of color, lots of shrieking from the young girls behind me!!! Good job guys from Bellyrine!
Bollywood in motion!... Bollywood dance workshop as part of the Splash Dance program- 4/7/05 It was great to see a bunch of familiar faces! I had a blast! There was lots of jumping around with much over exagerated enthusiasm, shakin our hips, swatting at flies - just a few analogies for the moves we practiced. We put the 6 or so different dance steps into a little choreographed piece, which once mastered was performed at twice the speed! Great fun - and what a workout! Check out the gallery for another pic! Arabic Drumming!
On Sunday the 29th May, Anita Larkin came down from the Underbelly studio to the Bellyrine Bellydance studio to host an Arabic Drumming workshop. It was a great day with lots of eager students coming together to create a few flowing pieces, learning three different rhythms (baladi, khalegi & 9/8) As always it's great for even the most inexperienced drummers to get the chance to play together and to practice their skills - I think we generally cringe at the volume of drumming and are too afraid to practice at home, but practice makes perfect & when you get given the chance to too, go for it! On Sunday 19/06 the Bellyrine bellydance studio was again the host for a workshop, this time it was "Samoan Body Percussion". I didn't get the chance to attend on sunday, but I loved it when I participated at the Underbelly Retreat back in January. If anyone would like to write a review on Sunday's w/shop - email me and I'll include it here! Thanks ND Contact me to share your news with the community! |
